The Vatican announced the death of Pope Francis on 21 April 2025 at the age of 88. Pope Francis was known for his humility, advocacy for the poor and having a progressive stance on social issues. Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis has made efforts to modernise the Catholic Church, promote interfaith dialogue and address global challenges including climate change and migration. Pope Francis’ body will lie in state in St. Peter’s Basilica before his funeral on 26 April 2025.
Following the funeral, the next pope will be decided by the cardinals who will meet in conclave in the Sistine Chapel.
